Why we are holistic breeders

Holistic breeding is a thoughtful and nurturing approach to raising animals that focuses on health, welfare, and the environment. There are many reasons to breed holistically, but ours is a very personal one. Before we ever began breeding we were very passionate about living life holistically. At Rocket City Coons we breed for health first which means every decision we make we take into consideration each cat and their individual health needs. As a holistic breeder, the philosophy guiding my practices goes beyond merely producing animals; it's about fostering a sustainable and ethical breeding process that benefits our Maine coons, our community, and the planet.

Holistic breeding places a high priority on the physical and emotional well-being of animals. By emphasizing a nurturing environment, stress-free living conditions, and compassionate handling, our Maine coons experience a better quality of life. We understand that animals who feel safe and content are not only happier but are also less prone to behavioral issues. This approach contrasts sharply with more conventional breeding practices that may not prioritize the individual welfare of animals. Holistic methods ensure each cat receives attention and care tailored to their specific needs, promoting a harmonious and positive living environment.

We breed for health first which means every decision we make we take into consideration the particular cat and their health needs. In the beginning we did a lot of research and found that cats are obligated carnivores so we fed them raw with bone and organ meat to give them the best possible nutrition. Then we supplemented with herbs to strengthen their immune system. We use diatomaceous earth in cycles for natural deworming and bug repellent. We use red marine algae and colloidal silver in the fall and winter for viruses that could pop up and we use slippery elm for any upset tummy. We have a schedule for giving herbs so they are at their best and if there are any questions we consult with an herbalist and expert with herbs for cats.

Holistic breeding directly correlates to the health and vitality of the animals. By integrating practices such as organic feeding, limited use of chemicals, and preventative healthcare, we help ensure that our cats are not only physically healthier but also have stronger immune systems. This approach minimizes the incidence of genetic diseases often perpetuated by conventional breeding practices. Moreover, holistic breeding emphasizes the importance of regular exercise and mental stimulation, which are crucial for maintaining long-term health.

There have been many things happen over the course of our breeding and in that we have learned the best possible solutions. For instance we had a girl develop an allergy to fish. We now feed her raw chicken only. At that time we learned it’s actually quite common for cats to be allergic to fish! Something we never knew. In holistic breeding, the focus on natural nutrition and healthcare is paramount. We utilize diets consisting of high-quality, organic ingredients that provide optimal nutrition without synthetic additives. In terms of healthcare we prefer natural remedies and preventive healthcare practices such as herbal supplements, homeopathy. These practices support our cats health holistically, addressing potential issues before they become serious and maintaining wellness through natural means.

The core philosophy of holistic breeding centers around the profound respect and care for the animals. This approach significantly influences various aspects of welfare, particularly in reducing stress and enhancing the overall quality of life for our cats.

The quality of life that our cats experience under holistic breeding practices is very high. We often employ a variety of enriching activities that promote physical well-being and emotional health. These may include:

- Access to outdoor areas where they can play and explore.

- Diets that are natural and nutritionally balanced, often tailored to the specific needs of each individual cat.

- Regular health checks and preventive care to ensure physical well-being.

Such conditions not only nurture happier Maine coons but also contribute to their longevity and ability to breed naturally without intervention, which is less stressful for them.

We are always looking for ways to better the health of our cats. Holistic breeding not only enhances the welfare of our cats but also significantly boosts their overall health. This approach fosters the development of stronger immune systems and reduces the risk of genetic diseases, which are common issues in many conventional breeding practices.

Our techniques contribute significantly to the development of robust immune systems. This benefit arises from multiple facets of the holistic approach:

- Nutritional diets that provide all the necessary vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

- Reduced use of chemicals and medications, which can sometimes weaken the immune system when used excessively.

- Stress reduction, as chronic stress is known to compromise the immune system.

These factors combine to create a natural environment in which our cats can thrive and develop strong natural defenses against diseases. Choosing these practices represents more than just a method—it’s a commitment to the health, welfare, and sustainability of our breeding program. By focusing on the whole life and environment of our cats, not only do we raise healthier and happier cats, but we also contribute to a more ethical and sustainable world. Embracing holistic breeding is a step forward in fostering a deeper connection with nature and ensuring a positive impact on our planet for generations to come.
